Why black or melanin rich skin?
Research into the skin issues and skin conditions of black people has historically been limited. And on top of that, black representation and input into the production of cosmetic products has been limited. Without a seat at the table or sufficient studies to understand how black skin might be different, black people and other ethnic groups have been forced to use commercial products developed based on the general needs, presumably, of other groups of people. Some research shows that black, melanin-rich skin does have some differentiating characteristics. For example, black skin can be more prone to being dry. Something people refer to as ashiness. This is due to the fact that black skin has been found to have low water content thus less hydrated than other skin types. On top of this, black skin was found to contain the lowest level of ceramides. Ceramides are fats and lipids which protect the skin by acting as a barrier that enables retention of the water already contained in the skin while keeping our harmful germs or substances. So, DABA exists to fill this gap by making targeted products.
